Success in the Middle Act: Your support is needed!

Now is the time to stand together in support of increased focus on middle grades students. On April 14, 2011, Rep. Raúl Grijalva (D-AZ) and Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) reintroduced the Success in the Middle Act (H.R.1547 / S.833). Originally introduced in 2007, and again in 2009, the Success in the Middle Act of 2011 brings much needed support to underachieving school systems. The bill provides grants to states to ensure that all students in the middle grades are taught an academically rigorous curriculum with effective supports so that students complete the middle grades prepared for success in secondary school and postsecondary endeavors. The grants also serve to improve state and district policies and programs related to the academic achievement of students in the middle grades and to develop and implement effective middle grades models for struggling students.

We encourage you to contact your representatives and senators and ask them to co-sponsor this bill. Help them understand the importance of focusing on 10- to 15-year-olds and investing in proven strategies for the middle grades.

To support your efforts, you will find information on the NMSA website about the Success in the Middle Act of 2011, including how to be successful when contacting your members of Congress.
